Head of Concept Engineering
About the Role
You will lead the rapid design and fabrication of prototype devices, driving mechanical, electrical and firmware integration to produce both functional and highly cosmetic concept units. You will establish and operate a concept lab, select fabrication equipment, iterate quickly on optics and sensor layouts, and manage internal and external fabrication to meet product decision deadlines. You will work across disciplines to translate ambiguous inputs into clear action plans and ensure prototypes reach the fidelity required to guide product direction.
Requirements
- 10+ years of relevant design leadership experience in mechanical electrical and optical products
- Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering or design related discipline
- Experience with complex hardware and software integrated products
- Experience in optical design including liquid lenses and optical filtering
- Experience in PCB design and sensor integration including cameras and TOF sensors
- Proven prototyping fabrication and model making skills
- Experience operating autonomously and leading cross-functional efforts across time zones
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to read write and speak English fluently
- Attention to detail and ability to turn ambiguous inputs into action plans
Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical and electrical engineering for prototype devices
- Design and fabricate mechanical parts and mechanisms
- Design and develop custom PCBs and sensor placement
- Lead optical system design including liquid lens optical filters and actuated polarizers
- Integrate firmware with hardware for prototype validation
- Build and maintain a concept lab and select fabrication equipment
- Produce high-fidelity cosmetic and functional prototypes
- Collaborate with industrial design and product teams to support prototype needs
- Optimize prototype speed and fidelity to inform product decisions
- Manage external vendors and fabrication partners
- Mentor and lead a team of mechanical and electrical engineers
