Performance Engineer
About the Role
You will establish performance engineering across a Python monolith, GraphQL API, Postgres and CockroachDB databases and cloud infrastructure. You will profile and analyze production performance, identify bottlenecks in application code, database queries, caching, networking, and infrastructure, and implement optimisations. You will build tooling, metrics, traces, and profiling to improve observability, develop load, stress, and scalability tests, integrate automated performance testing into CI/CD, and mentor backend and database engineers on performance best practices.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in performance engineering, SRE, or systems optimisation
- Deep proficiency in Python performance analysis and optimisation
- Deep understanding of Postgres performance, SQL optimisation, indexing, and query execution
- Experience with GraphQL performance
- Experience building internal performance tooling or platforms
- Track record of measurable performance improvements
- Expertise in performance testing, load testing, profiling, and optimisation of backend services and databases
- Strong programming skills in more than one language (Python preferred)
- Solid understanding of networking, distributed systems, and caching strategies
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate a performance engineering function
- Profile and analyze production performance to identify bottlenecks
- Optimize application code, database queries, caching, and infrastructure
- Develop and maintain load, stress, and scalability testing frameworks
- Improve observability by creating metrics, traces, profiling, and alerting
- Integrate automated performance testing into CI/CD pipelines
- Partner with and mentor backend developers and database engineers
- Create performance guidelines, training materials, and internal tooling
- Detect and surface performance regressions early
