Principal Forward Deployed Engineer
About the Role
You will operate at the intersection of technical leadership and strategic delivery, leading high-impact engagements with state governments and public sector partners. You will guide architecture and adoption strategy for digital identity solutions, write and review code, architect systems, and set engineering best practices. You will lead projects from rapid prototyping through development to operations and maintenance, translate government requirements into standards-based solutions that integrate modern and legacy systems, represent technical decisions in executive-level customer conversations, mentor forward deployed engineers and delivery teams, and travel as needed to support state government partners.
Requirements
- 8+ years building and delivering production-grade software in statically typed languages (Rust, Go, Java, C#)
- Proven ability to lead large-scale engineering efforts spanning multiple teams and organizations
- Expertise across the software stack including infrastructure, DevOps, architecture, frontend, and mobile
- Experience working with public sector or highly regulated industries and engaging with executive and technical customers
- Strong leadership, communication, and consulting skills with ability to influence strategy and execution
- Based in the United States and willing to travel as needed to support state government partners
- Familiarity with procurement, compliance, and governance considerations in state government projects (bonus)
- Deep knowledge of computer security, cryptography, and user data privacy practices (bonus)
Responsibilities
- Define technical strategy and architecture for public sector deployments
- Act as the senior technical representative in executive-level customer meetings
- Lead multiple end-to-end multi-year projects from prototyping to operations and maintenance
- Architect and build backend systems, full-stack web applications, and mobile solutions with a focus on security, privacy, and accessibility
- Translate government requirements into standards-based solutions that integrate with modern and legacy systems
- Mentor and guide forward deployed engineers and delivery teams and set engineering standards
- Identify and drive efficiencies across projects and share knowledge and tooling
- Collaborate with platform teams to feed customer insights into product roadmap and standards contributions
